Biography
Hi, my name is Stephanie L. Poumade. I am the founder, owner, and Speech Language Pathologist behind Signs & Sounds Speech Therapy, LLC. I am a native of New Jersey. I received my BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) from James Madison University in May 2005, my MS in Speech Language Pathology (SLP) at Gallaudet University in May 2007, and my MS in Special Education with a Concentration in Deaf/Hard of Hearing in May 2013.
I have been interested in working with the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (DHH) population for as long as I can remember. I chose to pursue my Master's in Speech Language Pathology at Gallaudet University in order to become highly qualified in working with this population and to immerse myself in Deaf Culture and American Sign Language (ASL). Gallaudet is a small, public university in Northeast DC that is completely dedicated to the needs of DHH students. It is a one of a kind educational institution worldwide. While doing graduate work at Gallaudet I fine-tuned my ASL and learned how to use Cued American English or Cued Speech.
Though working with this population is my passion, I hold a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) in Speech Language Pathology, which means that I am nationally certified to work in any realm of Speech Language Pathology and support all ages of the lifespan (birth to end of life). After beginning my career as an SLP in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), I decided to pursue a degree to become a licensed Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing while working full time. I have worked in the public school system and held internships in various settings, including private practice and hospital environments (acute, subacute, and long term care). I hold a Virginia Board of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology License in Speech Language Pathology, Virginia Department of Education Endorsements in Speech Language Pathology & Hearing Impairment (K-12), as well as American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) Certification. I am a member of ASHA, the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia (SHAV), and the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW). I hold First Aid & CPR Certification as well.
My areas of expertise are expressive language, receptive language, articulation, aural (re)habilitation, and the use of ASL to facilitate communication in babies and toddlers. I am currently working for FCPS as an Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing; however, I have also been a Special Education Department Chair as well as a full time Speech Language Pathologist with FCPS in the past. I decided to open a private practice to pursue my SLP interests outside of my full-time job. I reside in Gainesville, VA with my husband, my son, and my daughter.
I would love to meet you and/or your family member and help you achieve your communication goals!
